THIRTEEN

TWO DAYS LATER

Bang bang bang

“Come on, MacBain,” King said, “you can’t stay behind your door forever.”

King was right, although the thought was appealing. I’d just got back from my second legal visit with Libby, and she’d given me a folder of my case that she’d been working on. I’d asked the prison officers who escorted me back onto House Unit One to lock me in my cell as soon as we got back on the wing. I was interested in burying my head in my legal documents, but the main reason I wanted to be kept behind my door instead of getting the evening association was that I’d been continuing to avoid King and his gang.

Bang bang bang

King thumped my door again. “You need to face the music, MacBain. You didn’t fulfil your obligation in Woodhill.”

I left my plastic chair and went over to the observation panel on my door that King had opened.

“I’m not avoiding you, King. I’m trying to concentrate on my case. I’ve got a lot of paperwork to go over.”

King’s eyes were demented. “I don’t care about your case. I’m the most important thing in your life now. You need to make me happy. You didn’t kill Williams. He’s gonna make a full recovery.”

“I’m sorry, I tried, I stabbed him up, but I got interrupted by the screws.”

King shook his head disapprovingly and prodded the thick glass of the observation panel. “You still owe me, and this time there’s interest.”

“Come on, King, I’m sorry it didn’t go the way we wanted it to with Williams, but I’m with you. I’m loyal to you.”

“Loyal?” King sneered. “I’ve heard it all before.” He looked to his right down the landing. “Hey, gov, MacBain wants to come out for association.”

“No, he doesn’t. He’s concentrating on his case,” the prison officer said in the distance. “Leave him alone.”

“He’ll tell you himself,” King looked back at me, “won’t you, MacBain?”

I felt I’d put off the inevitable confrontation with King for as long as I could, and I fancied my chances at talking my way out of trouble with him.

“Yeah, that’s fine,” I replied. “I’ll work on my case later.”

Unfortunately, King’s eyes didn’t soften, and he held my stare coldly.

The prison officer arrived at my door, and King moved out of his way, then the officer peered through the glass. “Do you really want out, MacBain?”

“Yes, gov. I’m getting a headache, and I could do with a break from reading.”

The officer unlocked my door and opened it.

“You’ve got half an hour of association left,” the officer said.

I stepped out of my door, and the officer looked and King and me, suspicious of what might happen between us, but King kept a lid on his temper.

“Let’s walk and talk,” King said to me.

We went to the pool table on the ground floor where King’s gang was. Two out of the seven men held pool cues but weren’t interested in their game. Instead, they opted to keep their eyes locked on me like the rest of the gang were doing as I approached them.
